Heat stroke death toll climbs to 1360 in Karachi

KARACHI (Dunya News) – At least 1360 patients have died due to heatstroke in different hospitals in Karachi, Dunya News reported on Wednesday.

According to details, 200 patients have died at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, 31 at Karachi Metropolitan Hospital, 176 at civil hospital, 374 at Jinnah Hospital, 39 at Sindh Government Qatar Hospital, two at Government Lyari Hospital, 51 at Cardiology Hospital while 27 heat stroke patients lost their lives at Sindh Government Hospital in Korangi until now.

Heatstroke treatment centres have been set up around the city to treat the tens of thousands affected by heatstroke and dehydration.

Karachi hospitals have treated nearly 80,000 people for the effects of heatstroke and dehydration, according to medical officials.

The heatwave struck Karachi at a time when the city s Muslim majority was observing the dawn-to-dusk fasting month of Ramazan, further worsening the situation. Repeated power outrages across the province, and particularly in Karachi, exacerbated the situation.

Earlier on Monday, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif cancelled his visit to Karachi due to some official engagements.

According to official sources, the Prime Minister has arrived in Karachi on one-day visit where he will attend a briefing on harsh weather conditions in Karachi.

The premier will review situation arising after heat wave in the city, power crisis, measures regarding reduction in load shedding and law & order situation.
