NADRA has no system to read magnetic ink: report
Updated on

Summary The national treasury has suffered an inherent loss due to NADRA.

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News)—National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) which had earlier suggested the use of magnetic ink to restrict electoral rigging doesn’t have the technology to read it.

NADRA’s current system is unable to even read the finger prints on National Identity Cards registered before 2005.

Sources have told Dunya News that NADRA doesn’t have the technology to read magnetic ink.

The optical devices can only read real-time finger prints. NADRA does not have the specialized magnetic ink character readers (MICRs) that are required to read such ink.

NADRA has now termed the use of magnetic ink as useless and instead suggested to choose the regularly-used ink for the elections.

The regular ink costs Rupees 35 as compared to the more expensive magnetic ink which costs Rupees 99. The national treasury has suffered an inherent loss due to this step by NADRA.
