Summary During the Karachi Operation 2940 people were killed including 16 rangers and 170 police officers.
KARACHI (Dunya News) — The Karachi Operation has been going on in the city of lights for more than a year but the operation has not been successful in achieving the desired results. So far 2940 people have been killed in the operation, Dunya News reported.
The Karachi Operation was launched on September 5 headed by IG Sindh Shahid Nadeem Baloch and AIG Karachi Ghulam Qadir Thebo with high expectations to control the law and order situation in Karachi.
However, more than a year has passed but the law enforcement agencies were not able to control the target killers during the operation. While the operation was going on IG Sindh and AIG Karachi were replaced with Iqbal Mahmood and Shahid Hayat respectively.
Though Karachi operation has been successful in fulfilling some of its expectations, the low grade police chief Shahid Hayat had to be removed and Thebo was appointed instead.
Later, Iqbal Mahmood was also removed from his post after a difference of opinion arose regarding the artillery forces between him and the Sindh government. Consequently, Ghulam Haider Jamali became the IG of Sindh only to be disqualified on September 13, 2014.
The replacement of IG and AIG in Sindh did not work as the police continued facing the same issues and later the shortage of funds was also affecting the results of the operation.
During the Karachi Operation 2940 citizens of Karachi were killed including 16 rangers and 170 police officers. In police encounters, 16000 suspects were arrested whereas 480 of them were killed.
Though the police force and rangers are struggling to maintain law and order throughout the city, Karachi still remains plagued with target killings, terrorist activities and crimes like kidnappings, murder and extortion.
