Treason case: Shaukat Aziz's summary for emergency submitted in court
Special court headed by Justice Faisal Arab resumed hearing of treason case against Musharraf.
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) — Former military ruler Pervez Musharraf’s treason case hearing was resumed on Tuesday by the special court of Islamabad, Dunya News reported. During the hearing of Musharraf’s treason case, the Defence lawyer Farogh Nasim, submitted the summary report by former Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz in the special court. According to the court, the document would not be used in the court proceedings until the required investigation has been carried out.
A three-member bench of special court headed by Justice Faisal Arab heard the treason case against Musharraf. The prosecution witness, FIA officer Maqsood ul Hasan, appeared before the court. Musharraf’s counsel Farogh Nasim cross-examined him. Maqsood ul Hasan told the court that no evidence could be gathered regarding the involvement of any institution in the Emergency imposed on November 3, 2007. He further said that the investigation team had inspected all the concerned people including two governors, however, no evidence could be found against anybody except Musharraf. Farogh Nasim argued that if no evidence was found against others then why the prosecution proposed their investigation in the first place. Maqsood ul Hasan took a stance that access to the available records could not be acquired despite contacting the Ministry of Defence, therefore they sought to investigate others involved. Farogh Nasim submitted the summary report which was sent by Shaukat Aziz to Musharraf for the proclamation of Emergency in 2007.
Proescutor Akram Sheikh objected that a document published in a newspaper could not be produced as evidence but Farogh Nasim informed that the document is available on the internet. Justice Faisal Arab sustained that the document couldn’t be included as part of the court proceedings without further investigations. He said that in order to investigate the document, former Prime Minsiter Shaukat Aziz would be given a notice and a commission would be sent to London. The case hearing was adjourned until tomorrow.
