Summary The chairman will to be appointed through consultation with the leader of the opposition.

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday sent a letter to the opposition leader in the National Assembly and proposed two names for the appointment of chairman National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

According to sources, the Prime Minister has recommended names of Justice Rehmat Hussain Jaffery and former federal secretary Khwaja Zahiruddin Ahmed for NAB chairman’s post.

According to the NAB Ordinance, the chairman has to be appointed through consultation with the leader of the opposition. Also, the Supreme Court had ordered ‘meaningful’ consultation between the government and the opposition for the purpose.

Two former NAB chairmen — retired Justice Syed Deedar Hussain Shah and retired Admiral Fasih Bokhari — have been sent home by the Supreme Court on separate petitions filed by then leader of opposition Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan who contended that no meaningful consultation had taken place between him and the then PPP government for both appointments.

Admiral Bokhari was removed on May 29 and his appointment, made on Oct 17, 2011, declared illegal by the apex court, while Justice Shah was appointed on Oct 19, 2010, and sent home on March 11, 2011.
