ISLAMABAD: Member of the Parliamentary Commission on creation of new provinces Arif Aziz Shaikh tabled a report for the creation of new provinces.
The report proposed name of Bahawalpur South Punjab and 59 seats of the National Assembly and 124 of Provincial Assembly for the new province.
It was stated in the report that the new province should comprise Multan‚ Bahawalpur and D.G. Khan divisions and the two districts of Mianwali and Bhakkar.
The parliamentary commission said that a province comprising of these three divisions and Mianwali and Bhakkar districts is highly sustainable from economic point of view.
The commission in its report also proposes that the water accord of 1991 may have to be revisted to provide for the share of the new province of Bahawalpur South Punjab.
It said that amendments in certain articles of the constitution are required to give effect to the proposal of the new province.
It was further stated that the matters relating to the water should be sorted out by the Council of Common Interests.
Sardar Shahjahan Yousaf voiced concerns over the presentation of report regarding the creation of new province in Punjab saying it is incomplete and does not envisage the creation of Hazara province.
Humair Hayat Rokhri rejected the report on creation of new province saying no opinion of the Opposition members have been sought on it. Besides‚ two districts of Punjab having no connection with South Punjab have been included in the new province‚ he said.
Munir Khan Orakzai also opposed the report.
The assembly will now resume its session on Monday at 5:00 pm.
