Energy crisis: Govt releases Rs 8b to PEPCO

Summary The government has released Rs.8 billion to PEPCO to end unannounced power outages in the country.

According to sources, the Finance Ministry issued Rs.8 billion to Pakistan Electric Power Company after the direction of Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani who has also taken notice of the un-announced power cuts and convened Energy Conference on Tuesday.“The release of Rs.8 billion will go a long way to overcome energy crisis to some extend as it will help the government to avoid violent protests in upcoming days,” said the official.The power-starved people still was staging demonstrations across many cities of the country to protest no let up in power load shedding as large-scale demonstrations turned increasingly violent as scores of people took to the streets, overpowering the police and damaging public property, to vent their anger against persistent outages.Pakistan Electric Power Company had held equally responsible the ministries of Finance and Petroleum along with his company for Power outages which triggered protests across the country.National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC) had already warned the government that if the current power crisis was not resolved, the power system would be rendered paralyzed in the next few days.Energy experts termed increasing power outages situation a complete failure of the government by saying that earlier government should take concrete steps to control the energy giant of the country.It is pertinent to mention here that owing to the gap between demand and supply of electricity urban areas in the country are being subjected to power cuts of up to 14 hours a day, while 20 hours of load shedding is being carried out in rural areas. People from different walks of life are facing problems due to hour’s long load shedding in scorching heat.
