(Reuters) - British columnist Owen Jones did not write an opinion article claiming Gaza will one day host the world’s largest Pride parade, contrary to online claims.

An image appeared, opens new tab on social media purporting to be a screenshot of the piece on the website of The Guardian newspaper.
“Diversity and inclusion is in the heart of all Palestinians,” said the image’s headline. “Gaza will one day host the world’s largest Pride parade.”

The image, which mimics the British outlet’s layout and style, also showed Jones’ picture and name.

Comments under the image suggest some had taken it seriously. One said, “That's how out of touch with reality he really is”, while another added, “Owen the gift who keeps on giving please let him go Saudi see if he can have his parade there”.

But a spokesperson for The Guardian said in an email: “The screenshot shared is not and has never been an article or headline published by the Guardian.” Jones said the post was “entirely fake”.

In May 2024, Reuters published a fact check about another fake Guardian headline, which was about the Palestinian territories and attributed to Zarah Sultana, then the Labour MP for Coventry South.

VERDICT

False. The Guardian said it had not published such an article or headline. Jones said it was a fake.
