False story about Adam Schiff and a military tribunal
(Reuters) – Posts on social media sites are falsely claiming that US Representative Adam Schiff has been convicted of treason and espionage and then killed at Guantanamo Bay. The source of the claims is a website that has shared multiple false stories which have been debunked by Reuters.
An example of a Facebook video sharing the misinformation on August 21 is visible here.
The post features various video clips with audio of a woman reading excerpts from a Real Raw News article seen archived archive.is/hV8zW.
In the video, a narrator presents news from an article titled “Shifty Adam Schiff Faces Firing Squad.”
Content from Real Raw News has been debunked by Reuters multiple times; some fact check articles can be.
Reuters previously addressed false claims that the military arrested Schiff in a June 29, 2021 fact-check article.
Real Raw News openly states in its ‘About Us’ section that “Information on this website is for informational and educational and entertainment purposes. This website contains humor, parody, and satire. We have included this disclaimer for our protection, on the advice of legal counsel.”
Schiff has maintained a visible presence in public and social media. Days after the false social media posts, the eleven-term representative can be seen in CSPAN footage from August 23, 2021 (here). Schiff’s August 24 celebratory tweet after the U.S. House passed the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act is visible.
