The armed wing of Hamas, the Qassam Brigades, says its fighters have carried out an ambush and inflicted casualties on a group of five Israeli soldiers in the al-Qarara town west of Khan Younis.

Israeli forces continue to bomb school sheltering displaced Palestinians.

The forces attacked a such school in central Gaza, just a day after directing people to flee from areas near the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, the last functioning medical facility in the area.
 

Israeli military claims to have eliminated dozens of Palestinian fighters

The Israeli military claimed in its published a war update that on Sunday, its forces targeted the site which was used by Hamas to launch a rocket towards central Israel.

The Israeli military claims to have “eliminated” dozens of Palestinian fighters and “large quantities of weapons” in the areas of Khan Younis and Deir el-Balah.

It also claims to have eliminated dozens of Palestinian fighters in Tal as-Sultan. 

Hamas draws a line: no new terms

Hamas insisted that Israel should be bound by the terms of a proposal laid out by United States President Joe Biden and the UN Security Council.

The group made this statement while rejecting new Israeli conditions in ceasefire talks in Egypt.

At Beirut airport, flights cancelled amid Hezbollah-Israel escalation

BEIRUT (Lebanon) (AFP) – Dozens of passengers at Lebanon's only international airport were anxiously checking announcement boards Sunday as more flights to the capital were cancelled or delayed amid escalating hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah.

Beirut International Airport was functioning but many passengers were stuck as major airlines announced flight suspensions, after Israel and Hezbollah announced broad strikes in an escalation of cross-border hostilities.

US says commitment to Israel's defence is ironclad, 'postured' to support

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The United States said its commitment to Israel's defence was ironclad and that it was "postured" to support its ally after the Israeli military said on Sunday it had launched strikes in Lebanon to prevent a major attack by Hezbollah.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin had spoken with Israeli counterpart Yoav Gallant about Israel's defence against attacks by the Iran-backed Lebanese militant group, Pentagon spokesman Major General Pat Ryder said.

Israel and Hezbollah in major missile exchange as escalation fears grow

JERUSALEM/BEIRUT (AFP) - Israel launched air strikes into Lebanon on Sunday (Aug 25), saying it destroyed "thousands" of Hezbollah rocket launchers and thwarted a major attack, while the Lebanese group insisted it had been able to deliver a drone and rocket barrage of its own.

The result was perhaps the biggest exchange of fire in 10 months of a war which began with a Hamas attack launched from Gaza and has triggered both new violence on the Lebanon-Israel border and fears of a broader conflagration in the Middle East.

No agreement in Gaza ceasefire talks in Cairo, Egyptian sources say

CAIRO (Reuters) - There was no agreement on Sunday (Aug 25) in the Gaza ceasefire talks that took place in Cairo, with neither Hamas nor Israel agreeing to several compromises presented by mediators, two Egyptian security sources said, casting doubt on the chances of success in the latest US-backed effort to end the 10-month-old war.

Months of on-off talks have failed to produce an agreement to end Israel's devastating military campaign in Gaza or free the remaining hostages seized by Hamas in the militant group's Oct 7 attack on Israel that triggered the war.
