SAN FRANCISCO (Web Desk) - Lucasfilm, the production company behind the Star Wars franchise, has announced that Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy will be directing the latest films in the series. This is a significant milestone as Obaid-Chinoy will be the first woman and person of colour to direct a Star Wars film. The surprising news was announced during the Star Wars Celebration in London, back on Friday.

Actor Daisy Ridley Rey, the main lead and the protagonist from the previous films, builds a new Jedi Order after the events of The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. Steven Knight, the writer of the popular TV show Peaky Blinders, will be penning the script for the new film.

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, who has won both, Oscar and an Emmy, is well known for her documentaries: Saving Face, A Girl in the River and The Price of Forgiveness. The documentaries although earned her a lot of fame internationally, but, unfortunately some of them were banned in Pakistan: her native country. She has also directed several episodes of the Disney TV show Ms Marvel featuring Mehwish Hayat and Fawad Khan along others. The story of Ms.Marvel is focused on a Pakistani girl with superpowers.

During the announcement, Obaid-Chinoy expressed her excitement for the project, saying, "I have always been attracted to the hero's journey and the world needs more heroes! The blueprints of the heroes we see on screen should be rooted in reality….. which is why I was attracted to the promise of a new Jedi Order."

The announcement marks return of the studio in film production, as after Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker back in 2019, the studio gave more attention to TV projects.

This collaboration between Obaid-Chinoy and Lucasfilm was first rumored in October of last year, according to Deadline. The news of her involvement has sparked a lot of excitement among Star Wars fans, who are eagerly awaiting the release of the upcoming film.
