(REUTERS) - Britain s Prince William said the death of his mother Princess Diana left him feeling "pain like no other pain" and called on society to "talk about emotions" to help with mental health issues.

William was aged 15 when Diana died in a 1997 car crash, an event which he said allowed him connect with "other people out there who have been bereaved".

He also spoke about his time at as an air ambulance helicopter pilot, an experience which emotionally impacted him to the point that "I could feel it was going to take its toll and be a real problem."

"I had to speak about it," he went on to say.

William, also known as the Duke of Cambridge, previously worked as a pilot with the East Anglia Air Ambulance in eastern England, a role he gave up in 2017 to focus on his royal duties.

The prince was speaking with British footballers during a television programme titled "A Royal Team Talk: Tackling Mental Health", which is to air on Sunday (May 19).

The programme comes following the launch of a new phone messaging service by Britain s young royals last Friday (May 10) to help people suffering a mental health crisis.

William, his younger brother Prince Harry and their wives Kate and Meghan launched the service, called "Shout", with the aim to provide 24/7 support for people suffering from crises such as suicidal thoughts, abuse, relationship problems and bullying by connecting them to trained volunteers and helping them find longer-term support.

The two princes have been widely praised for speaking out about their own struggles with mental health struggles in the wake of the death of their mother and have made the issue one of their main charitable causes.
