Rahi debuted with 'Bashira' in 1970s

LAHORE (Web Desk) – Punjabi cinema’s alpha with leathery skin and hair jam-packing his head who ruled the screen space for two decades, Muhammad Sultan Khan’s 20th death anniversary is being observed today.

With screen name Sultan Rahi, the heroic figure who would side with the victims and get them justice from doomed social structure could not get justice himself.

Man who remained the last word on film sets for the longest time was gunned down during a dacoity attempt at Sialkot bypass in Gujranwala on January 9.

Rahi debuted with ‘Bashira’ in 1970s which pulled the struggling extra to the forefront with camera peeping straight in his eyes, ignoring the rest.

The man was known to have soft corner for extras probably because he never wanted to forget his past in order to lead a down-to-earth yet star studded life. Rahi established a special fund scheme for extras which offered many struggling people in the industry a source of survival.

Ahmed Nadeem Qasmi’s novel took his following through the roof with characters, Wehshi Jutt and Maula Jutt. Anjuman and Saima played female leads opposite Rahi in several films. Starring opposite Rahi gave life changing push to careers of both the heroines.

Rahi starred in around 750 films including Urdu reels and the man was noted in Guinness Book of World Record at the time.
The Sultan of Punjab was gunned down in 1996 in Gujranwala.
