'Slumdog Millionaire' child star Rubina Ali rendered homeless
Rubina Ali Qureshi, the nine-year-old girl who became an overnight star after appearing in an Oscar winning film Slumdog Millionaire last year, has been rendered homeless after the city railway authorities again demolished her shanty home in Mumbai. According to Rubinas father, they had been living in the suburbs of Mumbai for the last many years in the same slum; however he added that their homes have been razed despite many assurances by the government in this regard. Local officials backed by police razed 25 homes that they said were encroaching on railway land in the Gharib Nagar slum where Rubina lived with her parents and siblings. Rubina, whose house has been destroyed and rebuilt at least twice this year, told reporters that she and her family would now live with relatives in the same area, behind Mumbais Bandra railway station. She added that government has reneged from its promises to allot her family a house. According to the authorities, the structures were razed because of being illegal. The house of another child star appeared in the same movie Azharuddin has also been demolished.
