CONAKRY (AFP) - Guinean investigators said Friday they were probing the case of a television reporter missing for almost a year, as his family spoke of their "complete despair" over his disappearance.

Cherif Diallo, who works for private channel Espace TV, was last seen outside his home on July 23, 2015, according to family members.

A judicial source, who could not be named, said the case was being probed, but declined to give further details.

In August 2015 Diallo’s bag, work badge and mobile were all found by fisherman, but not his motorbike, according to sources close to the investigators.

"It’s complete despair with a total lack of an investigation that we would call serious," said Diallo’s aunt, Hadja Halimatou Diallo, speaking on behalf of the family.

"It is almost impossible to carry on dreaming that we could find him safe and sound," she said, adding, however, that without a body the family could not mourn.

Moussa Moise Sylla, editor-in-chief of Espace TV, said his colleagues now feared for their lives.

"Each one of us thinks that tomorrow it’s our turn," he told AFP.

Guinea ranked 64 of 100 countries assessed by US rights monitor Freedom House in 2015 for press freedom.
