Summary Police have detained 42 Corinthians fans allegedly after attacking a group of Sao Paulo supporter
SAO PAULO: (AP) - Brazilian police have detained 42 Corinthians fans after they allegedly attacked a group of Sao Paulo supporters inside a subway station.
The Sao Paulo fans were heading to a match at Pacaembu Stadium, while Corinthians supporters were returning from the team s presidential elections.
Authorities said the Sao Paulo fans were outnumbered but were able to flee. There were no reports of serious injuries.
Saturday s fight happened a day after authorities reversed a decision to keep Corinthians fans from attending Sunday s match at rival Palmeiras.
The local federation had initially banned them because of safety reasons, but Corinthians threatened not to play without its fans.
A 16-year-old Novo Hamburgo fan was killed earlier this month in a fight between rival groups and police.
