Summary Roelof van der Merwe has decided to play international cricket for the Netherlands.
CAPE TOWN (AP) - Former South Africa spin bowler Roelof van der Merwe has decided to try and play international cricket for the Netherlands after being granted a Dutch passport.
Cricket South Africa said Tuesday that Van der Merwe, who represented the Proteas in 13 one-day internationals from 2009-10, will seek to represent the Netherlands immediately. He is hoping to make the Dutch squad for the World Twenty20 early next year.
CSA said van der Merwe pursued a Netherlands passport through his Dutch ancestry. He received the passport on Monday.
The 30-year-old Van der Merwe will also leave the Pretoria-based Titans team and seek a contract in English county cricket, where he would qualify as a European Union player.
He said "my cricket journey will continue, but I have decided on a different path."
