Govt decides to impose emergency in KP amid political turmoil: sources

According to sources, the federal cabinet meeting has been called for 9:30am, where approval for imposing the emergency in the province is expected to be sought

ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) - The federal government has decided to impose an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with the federal cabinet expected to approve the move at a meeting scheduled for Sunday (tomorrow), sources said.

According to sources, the federal cabinet meeting has been called for 9:30am, where approval for imposing the emergency in the province is expected to be sought.

Separate sessions of both houses of Parliament have also been summoned to endorse the move.

Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met President Asif Ali Zardari at the President House to discuss the country’s overall political and security situation.

According to an official statement issued by the President House, the prime minister was accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister Senator Ishaq Dar, Adviser on Political Affairs Senator Rana Sanaullah, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan, Law Minister Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar, and Federal Minister Ahad Cheema.

Senator Sherry Rehman, Syed Naveed Qamar, Senator Saleem Mandviwalla and Dr Asim Hussain assisted the president during the meeting.

The participants agreed to convene separate sessions of the National Assembly and Senate on Tuesday, October 13.

Sources said the meeting also reviewed a report submitted by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi regarding the province’s law and order and security situation.
