Sheikh Zayed Hospital achieves public sector milestone with first robotic knee replacement

LAHORE (Dunya News) – Sheikh Zayed Hospital Lahore has successfully performed what officials describe as Punjab's first robotic total knee replacement surgery in the public sector, marking a significant step forward in the adoption of advanced medical technology in government hospitals.

Hospital officials said the procedure, known as robotic total knee arthroplasty, was carried out by Professor Dr Wasif Ali Shah in collaboration with RECH International. The surgery utilised robotic technology designed to improve surgical precision and support patient care.

According to the hospital, the achievement makes Sheikh Zayed Hospital the first public-sector healthcare institution in Punjab to introduce robotic technology for total knee replacement procedures.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Muhammad Hatif Iqbal said expanding access to advanced medical technologies in public hospitals is essential for improving healthcare services. He added that under the leadership of Professor Dr Ayesha Humayun, the hospital has continued to invest in modern treatment methods and specialised medical care.

Medical experts said robotic-assisted knee replacement surgery can offer greater precision in implant positioning compared with conventional techniques. Depending on the individual patient and clinical circumstances, the approach may also contribute to improved joint alignment and recovery outcomes. However, treatment results can vary from patient to patient.

The successful operation involved a multidisciplinary team from the hospital's Orthopaedics, Anaesthesia, Radiology, and Operating Theatre (OT) departments.

Hospital officials described the procedure as an important development for orthopaedic care in Pakistan's public health sector, saying it reflects ongoing efforts to provide patients with access to modern surgical techniques and internationally recognised standards of treatment.
