Punjab expands 'Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar' to benefit joint families, offering interest-free loans, 1,534 plots, and 160,000 homes by June 2026, promoting housing and social harmony

LAHORE (Dunya News) - The Punjab government has announced an expansion of its flagship housing initiative, “Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar”, aiming to benefit joint families across the province.

Under this revolutionary programme, families can now access interest-free, easy-installment loans to expand their homes, reinforcing the centuries-old tradition of joint family living while promoting social harmony.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif described the programme as a “golden gift” to Punjab, emphasizing the government’s commitment to both social cohesion and housing development. The initiative now includes joint families under its scope, providing them with specialized facilities to enlarge their homes while keeping the essence of shared living spaces intact.

The government has set a bold target of constructing 160,000 homes by June 2026. Additionally, residents without land will be allotted plots and provided with interest-free loans to build homes under the “Apni Zameen, Apna Ghar” scheme. As part of the first phase, 1,534 plots will be allocated in cities including Jhelum (194), Kasur (129), Faisalabad (84), and Lodhran (59) through a lottery system.

A recent briefing revealed that 18,80,081 users are registered under the housing programme, with 10,66,559 applicants actively seeking benefits. To date, 67,197 homes have been completed, while 53,843 are under construction, backed by a historic loan disbursement of 164.66 billion PKR and an impressive recovery rate of 99%.

The chief minister also instructed the government to expedite the next installment payments, increase project funds, and formulate policies to assist families in case of the unfortunate demise of a primary applicant, ensuring continued support for affected families.

This expansion represents a transformative step for Punjab’s housing sector, combining financial accessibility with social welfare and long-standing cultural traditions.
