Floods wipe out crops across Punjab, leaving farmers high and dry

Pakistan's most populous province is now staring down the barrel of a major agricultural crisis

LAHORE (Dunya News) – New findings have revealed the staggering damage floods have caused to Punjab’s agriculture, leaving farmers in tears and raising fears of a major food crisis.

Reports suggest more than 1.3 million acres of crops have been destroyed across the province. Faisalabad Division has been the hardest hit, with over 323,000 acres swallowed by floodwaters.

Gujranwala Division lost 262,862 acres, while Gujrat Division saw 238,416 acres of farmland wiped out.

In Bahawalpur Division, 145,432 acres of crops went under water, Multan lost 58,439 acres, and DG Khan 49,165 acres. Sahiwal Division reported damage to 137,079 acres, Lahore Division 99,421 acres, and Sargodha Division 12,073 acres.

Experts say Punjab is now staring down the barrel of a major agricultural crisis. Crops such as cotton, rice, sugarcane, and fodder have been badly battered. Farmers, who watched their standing crops sink beneath the floods, are crying out for urgent help.

Agricultural specialists warn that Punjab’s food self-sufficiency is on the line, with billions of rupees in damages already piling up.

They say the government must step in quickly to pick up the pieces and provide relief before the situation goes from bad to worse.
