Monsoon rains claim more lives as death toll nears 820 across Pakistan

NDMA urges provincial authorities to remain on high alert

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has released its fresh report on the damage caused by the ongoing monsoon rains, which continue to wreak havoc across the country.

According to the report, 14 people lost their lives in the past 24 hours, with Punjab bearing the brunt as 13 deaths were reported from the province alone. In Sialkot, five people were killed, while four lost their lives in Gujrat, one in Wazirabad, and three in Narowal. Meanwhile, one casualty was reported from Azad Kashmir.

The NDMA further noted that in the last 24 hours, one person was injured in Punjab and three in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). Since June 26, a total of 819 people have died while 1,111 have been injured in rain-related incidents nationwide.

Punjab has so far reported 182 deaths and 594 injuries, while KP has seen the worst toll with 479 deaths and 350 injuries. In Azad Kashmir, 28 people have died and 29 have been injured, while Gilgit-Baltistan has recorded 41 deaths and 52 injuries since the onset of the monsoon season.

The report also highlighted the destruction of infrastructure and livestock. Since June 26, 6,138 cattle have perished, 8,658 houses have been destroyed, and 238 bridges have been washed away, leaving many communities cut off from vital supplies.

The NDMA has urged provincial authorities to remain on high alert, stressing that the worst may not be over yet as heavy rains are still on the cards in several regions.
