Khawaja Asif visits Nullah Aik, low lying areas of Sialkot amid torrential rains

MPAs Mansh Butt and Chaudhry Faisal Ikram are also accompnaying the minister

SIALKOT (Dunya News) - Defence Minister Khawaja Asif on Wednesday visited Nullah Aik and reviewed situation following the recent heavy rains in Sialkot.

He observed the potential hazards in the low-lying areas and the drainage system, and directed the civic agencies concerned to take immediate steps for saving people from any loss of life and property.

“I am here among the people and will ensure the provision of all possible relief,” Asif said.

He said that the government and the administration were standing by the people in this hour of difficulty.

Members of Provincial Assembly (MPAs) Mansha Ullah Butt and Chaudhry Faisal Ikram were also present on the occasion.

Earlier, torrential rains in Sialkot shattered an 11-year record, leaving several parts of the city under water and triggering flood fears.

According to the deputy commissioner, more than 335 millimeters of rainfall was recorded in the city. Low-lying areas including Rang Pura, Shahab Pura, Dara Arain, Allama Iqbal Chowk, and Prem Nagar were badly hit, with rainwater piling up in streets and neighborhoods.

Overflow from Nullah Dek has already flooded nearby villages, forcing residents to move to safer places.

Punjab Minister for Housing and Urban Development Bilal Yasin rushed to Sialkot on an emergency visit to oversee relief and rescue operations.

Deputy Commissioner Saba Asghar declared a local holiday due to the emergency situation in the district and urged residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.

The deputy commissioner also invoked Section 144 and barred citizens from going near rivers or streams.
