Top court denies bail in heroin case; justices raise concerns over use of drones in smuggling
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - The Supreme Court has remarked that powerful and influential individuals are involved in drug smuggling across the country.
A two-member bench, headed by Justice Hassan Azhar Rizvi, heard the bail plea of accused Fayaz Hussain in a narcotics case.
During the hearing, the counsel for the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) informed the court that 10 kilograms of heroin and a drone were recovered from the accused. It was also revealed that a Punjab Police official, Mazhar Iqbal, was allegedly involved in the smuggling operation alongside the accused.
Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan noted that drones are now being used to smuggle drugs across borders and emphasised that “influential people are involved in this illicit trade.”
Expressing concern over the accused potentially fleeing if granted bail, Justice Afghan remarked, “If bail is granted today, the accused will abscond. He only seeks bail out of fear of punishment.”
The defense counsel argued that the accused would return to court if convicted, but Justice Rizvi directed that the trial court should complete the proceedings first.
Subsequently, the Supreme Court dismissed Fayaz Hussain’s bail application in the narcotics case.
