Govt has required numbers to pass constitutional amendment: Khawaja Asif

Amendment is being brought for the supremacy of parliament, says PML-N leader

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - Defence Minister Khawaja Asif claimed that the government has the required numbers to pass the 26th constitutional amendment.

He was talking to media on Saturday outside the Parliament House.

The senior PML-N leader said that the ruling coalition was bringing the amendment only for the supremacy of the parliament.

He dispelled the impression that the members of opposition were being ‘abducted’ to get their votes for the amendment.

“All the members of opposition are at their homes. A fake narrative is being made by a political party,” said Khawaja Asif.

He added that all the opposition members are available even on their phones.

The veteran politician was of the view that the government would try to pass the amendment during today’s session.

“A unanimous draft was prepared and we want maximum political parties to support it,” he said.

He added that the time of National Assembly and Senate sessions is being changed repeatedly to bring consensus.

Earlier, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said that Maulana Fazlur Rehman would play his role in bringing consensus on constitutional amendment.

He said that the process of political consultation was underway and the government was trying to develop a consensus on the proposed amendment.

He added that the participation of all the political parties in consultation process is the beauty of democracy.
