Asad Umar admits split within PTI ranks over assemblies' dissolution
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – PTI stalwart Asad Umar admitted that his party was divided over dissolution of assemblies in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa – a move announced by Imran Khan last month to push his demand for fresh elections in the country.
The former planning minister, in a statement, said some party members had endorsed Mr Khan’s decision to dissolve the assemblies this month while some wanted to delay the move for two to three months.
The PTI has given Dec 20 deadline to the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) to announce the election date, saying it will dissolve the Punjab and KP assemblies otherwise.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and its allies are adamant that the general election will be held on time.
A day earlier, PTI leader Chaudhry Fawad Hussain said the incumbent rulers of the "imported government" wanted to avoid the general elections as they didn’t know how to run the country’s affairs. In a statement, the minister said the affairs of the state were not run merely by appointing ministers and conducting foreign tours as “this job is a herculean task”. “Pakistan needs political stability and it’s not possible without a stable government.”
He further said if the PDM failed to come up with the final formula for the general election by Dec 20, the assemblies of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa would be dissolved. “The electoral process will be completed in both Punjab and KP before March 20, 2022,” Fawad claimed.
