Chief Engineer TEPA, accomplice arrested by NAB over assets beyond means

LAHORE (Dunya News) - The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has arrested Chief Engineer TEPA (Transport Engineering and Planning Agency) Mazhar Hussain Khan and a co-accused, Anjum Zeeshan, in assets beyond means case.

Mazhar Hussain, accused of creating assets and having bank accounts worth more than Rs 700 million, was arrested by NAB Lahore. He was previously posted as chief engineer in LDA (Lahore Development Authority), during which time he amassed assets around Rs 500 million in his and his family’s name.

According to NAB sources, the main accused Mazhar Hussain transferred Rs 200 million to his nephew whose monthly salary was a mere Rs 20,000. NAB Lahore had started an inquiry against Mazhar after a complaint of alleged financial embezzlement was made against him last year.

During the inquiry, evidence was gathered that the accused had obtained illegal financial benefits in various government projects with the help of the co-accused, Anjum Zeeshan.

Mazhar added millions to his and his family’s assets in the name of amnesty scheme; the investigation team found evidence that he had transferred Rs 230 million to his family’s bank accounts, the sources of which he has so far failed to prove.

According to NAB, it has been revealed that Mazhar owns three 1-kanal plots and two 10-marla plots in LDA Avenue Society. Besides, he also owned four expensive apartments in Mozang area of Lahore which he sold off for millions of rupees.

Mazhar also owns 16 Kanal 11 Marla land in Moza Amirpur and around Rs 80 million was transferred to his personal account, the sources of which are yet to be explained. Authorities will now present Mazhar before the accountability court in Lahore for physical remand.
