Justice Gulzar Ahmed to replace Justice Asif Saeed Khosa as CJP

Justice Gulzar Ahmed would take charge as the Chief Justice of Pakistan from December 22.

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – With Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Asif Saeed Khosa set to retire on December 20, the Ministry of Law has forwarded a summary to Prime Minister Imran Khan for the appointment of Justice Gulzar Ahmed as next Chief Justice of Pakistan. 

A notification regarding his appointment will be issued after approval of summary by President Dr Arif Alvi to appoint him as CJP.

Justice Gulzar Ahmed would take charge as the Chief Justice of Pakistan from December 22 and will hold the office for more than two years till February 2, 2022.

The oath-taking ceremony of Justice Gulzar would be held at the Aiwan-e-Sadr.

Profile

Justice Gulzar Ahmed was born on February 2, 1957, in Karachi, in the family of distinguished Lawyer of Karachi Noor Muhammed. He did his early education from Gulistan School, Karachi and obtained B.A. Degree from Government National College, Karachi and LL.B. Degree from S M Law College, Karachi.

Enrolled as an Advocate on 18th January, 1986 and as an Advocate of the High Court on April 4, 1988 and then as an Advocate of the Supreme Court of Pakistan on September 15, 2001. Elected as Honorary Secretary of the Sindh High Court Bar Association, Karachi, for the year 1999-2000. Practiced mainly on the Civil Corporate side and remained Legal Advisor of various Multinational and Local Companies, Banks and Financial Institutions.

He was elevated as Judge of the High Court of Sindh on August 27, 2002. He also remained Member Board of Governors, Institute of Business & Technology, NED University of Engineering & Technology, Sir Syed University of Engineering & Technology, Iqra University, Ahmed E.H. Jaffer Foundation and Agha Khan University, Karachi.

Justice Gulzar remained Chairman, Enrollment Committee of Sindh Bar Council, Karachi. Also remained Chairman of the Development Committee & I.T. Committee of the High Court of Sindh, Karachi. He attended 2009 Study Tour for Pakistani Judicial Officials on “International Cooperation in Terrorist Cases” sponsored by the United Nations Office on Drug and Crime at Vienna, Bonn and Berlin.

Justice Gulzar also attended “18th Intensive Study Programme for Judicial Educators” conducted by Commonwealth Judicial Education Institute, Canada held on 5-24 June, 2011 with sessions at Halifax, Ottawa and Toronto, Canada and conferred Fellowship by the Institute.

He was notified as Senior Puisne Judge of the High Court of Sindh on 14th February, 2011 and was elevated as Judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan on November 16, 2011. He attended “International Judicial Conference” as Co-Chair for thematic group “Parental Child Abduction & Transnational Jurisdiction” held on 19-21 April, 2013 at Islamabad.
