Middle East-inspired protests entered their fourth consecutive weekend in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

The protests are in response to online messages from abroad urging pro-democracy gatherings in major Chinese citiies inspired by the Jasmine Revolution in Tunisia. In the former British territory Hong Kong, a dozen members of the League of Social Democrats marched to the Chinese Liaison Office, demanding political reform and the release of an activist detained in mainland China. Police erected a metal barricade which protesters tried to break through. They then tried to march along the highway, but were rounded up by police about 100 meters away from the front gate of the Chinese Liason Office. In Taipei, capital of Taiwan, a dozen protesters gathered outside the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall. Led by Hong Kong students, protesters held up banners reading: Stop Suppressing Human Rights, and chanted Start Political Reform under the gate of Liberty Square where many mainland Chinese tourists pass. Despite the low turnout, protest organisers were not deterred.
