UAE home to world's highest percentage of immigrants

DUBAI (Daily Dunya) - United Arab Emirates (UAE) holds the largest number of immigrants from around the world.

British newspaper Daily Telegraph analyzed UN figures to calculate which countries have the most immigrants per head of population.

The report says that 88 percent of the total population of UAE is born in a foreign country however; most of them are residing in the country over economic factors. The vast majority is economic migrants, not refugees.



At least 3.5 million residents are Indians, 935,000 are from Egypt and 906,000 belong to Pakistan.

The majority work in low-skilled occupations. Migrant workers in the UAE have no right to remain permanently. Their visas are tied to contracts with their employers. Once those contracts are terminated they must leave the UAE.
