WAPDA Chairman shouldn't issue statements over Kalabagh Dam issue: Khurshid
Zafar Mahmood's statement over Kalabagh Dam issue against spirit of federalism, Shah says
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly (NA) Syed Khurshid Shah stated on Friday that being a public servant, Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) Chairman Zafar Mahmood should refrain from issuing statements over the Kalabagh Dam issue, reported Dunya News.
Shah said that three provincial assemblies of the country passed resolutions against the construction of the Kalabagah Dam, adding that a public servant should not issue statements over the matter after the passing of these resolutions.
Opposition leader said that the Kalabagh Dam issue was beyond the mandate of WAPDA Chairman, further stating that the power shortage issue can be solved through the construction of small dams, including the Bhasha Dam.
He said that the government was trying to divert attention from the power crisis in the country by resurrecting the Kalabagh Dam issue. Shah stated that WAPDA Chairman’s statements were against the spirit of federalism, adding that Zafar Mahmood should first become aware of the basics of federalism before issuing such statements.
Opposition leader said that the government should try to plunge into this very controversy. “Government shouldn’t give rise to new challenges for the federation by using WAPDA Chairman in this issue,” Shah said.
