Karachi dumper association's strike enters day-6, talks rescheduled today

Dunya News

President of the association had threatened to block the Super Highway

KARACHI (Dunya News) – Talks between dumper association and Sindh Traffic Police on Wednesday are scheduled again after earlier attempts by Karachi Commissioner failed leading to halt of construction activities due to lack of gravel.

Construction material supply is suspended across Karachi for the sixth day today.

Strike was called after traffic police had limited entering hours for drivers and dumper owners in the city. The boycott is building up pressure on the government and the police as construction across Sindh’s metropolitan has been stopped.

A delegation of at least ten members will see the Commissioner today. The meeting will be attended by traffic police, transport department, motorway police and other concerned departments  representatives.

All Pakistan Truck and Dumper Association and traffic police Deputy Inspector General (DIG) had held talks earlier however, the meeting ended with no positive outcome.

Dumper association president said that the talks failed and their demands were no way near to be met. It should be mentioned here that hundreds of labourers whose households rely on daily wages are out of work.

President of the association had threatened to block the Super Highway if the government fails to meet the demands. In a press conference on November 6 at Karachi Press Club, the association chief said that they have led a peaceful strike until then.

However, the protesting association would not tolerate delay from the government’s side, he warned.

The president also alleged the police of demanding extortion money from drivers. He said that at least 10,000 trucks were parked for an indefinite period of time despite pending orders from different construction sites in Karachi.

The traffic police DIG said that the protesters are demanding the authorities to allow their movement on Sundays after 8pm.
