Breaking cliches, women take driving seat with launch of Pink Rickshaws in Lahore
The project is by an NGO that will provide training and rickshaws on easy installments
LAHORE (Daily Dunya) – A non-governmental organization (NGO) The Environment Protection Fund on Friday unveiled pink rickshaws for women drivers on easy installments. The women drivers will use the rickshaws as a business opportunity mainly by driving women and families to their destinations.
The NGO behind the project has also embarked on the model to provide training and easy installment package to the women.
The Environment Protection Fund’s president Zara Aslam spoke to Daily Dunya and said that it is time to take practical steps instead of mere talking to empower women.
“Pakistani women are often harassed in the Pakistani society”, she said. “But we’ll provide training to the women drivers to deal with every kind of situation”.
Ms Aslam said the organization has ordered 25 rickshaws initially, adding that if the government supports then they will be able to introduce the rickshaw service in other cities as well.
She said women drivers will also be trained to perform minor repairs and hacks like changing tyres.
Other than training driving, drivers will also be assisted in driving licenses, she told.
Zara Aslam said pink rickshaws will be very comfortable and capable of carrying at least three passengers at a time.
