3,000MW shortfall leads to 12-16 hours of power cuts
Sixteen-hour loadshedding is tormenting people in rural areas.
LAHORE (Web Desk) - With mercury inching towards 40 degrees Celsius in most parts of the country, power shortfall has reached 3,000MW on Saturday, forcing authorities to resort to 12 to 16 hours of loadshedding.
According to the officials of National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC), electricity demand went up to 13,700MW because of the rising temperature in most parts of the country.
Currently, hydel power plants are generating 3,150MW, thermal power plants 1,570MW and IPPs 5,980MW.
Urban areas are facing 10 and rural areas up to 16 hours of loadshedding.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif last year campaigned with the promise to end the electricity crisis and won the elections. Worsening shortfall across Pakistan has forced the prime minister to directly intervene in efforts to mitigate the situation.
Pakistan has been in the grip of severe energy crisis for more than five years and successive governments have failed to solve the problem.
