The New York-based professor was on her way to lunch when she caught the eye of fashion journalists.

(Web Desk) - Lyn Slater, a 63-year-old professor of Fordham University New York, had always lived an ordinary life. What she had extraordinary was her edgy yet elegant style of dressing. And it was her sense of fashion that transformed her ordinary life and shot her to unexpected fame.

On her way to meet a friend outside the Lincoln Center while the New York Fashion Week was underway, the professor had no idea that her life was about to change drastically. Her quirky style of dressing caught the eye of journalists present to cover the fashion week. Suddenly, much to her surprise, Slater was surrounded by a horde of journalists, who thought she was some renowned fashion icon.

Lyn Slater, in an interview with a foreign media outlet, described how she unexpectedly became a style icon. She said, “The photographers surrounded me and started taking pictures, while two Japanese journalists started asking questions.”

The unexpected affair did not end there. The crowd started to increase as tourists, under the impression that they had come across a major fashion figure, joined in on the photo taking and video making. Lyn added that she was confused, until her friend arrived and informed her that she had unexpectedly become a style icon.

After the dramatic moment, Lyn rose to stardom. She is currently signed to a leading modeling agency, Elite Fashion, and has worked with brands such as Uniqlo and Mango. However, Lyn has not used this life-changing event to just be photographed. The professor-turned-model has used this opportunity to fight against an issue that people of her age face; ageism.

Slater has criticised discrimination in the fashion industry and everyday life based on people’s age, and has denounced the idea that people should ‘dress for their age’. In an interview, she said, “I think, if you are comfortable in what you’re wearing, no matter how old you are and you’re owning it, you’re going to look completely fine.”

With such an attitude at the age Lyn is, coupled with her dashing style, it’s no wonder that she has amassed a huge following. Her Instagram page, iconaccidental, a name that befits the fortuitous change in her life, has 176,000 followers.
