BERLIN (AFP) - German authorities on Thursday arrested an Eritrean man on manslaughter charges after the killing of a compatriot, a refugee, whose death raised fears of a racist murder amid the rise of a new anti-immigrant movement.

The 26-year-old man was detained over the death of the refugee, who was found stabbed to death last week in Dresden, the city s public prosecutor said.

The eastern city has been in the spotlight for weekly marches since October called by the populist PEGIDA movement against what it terms the "Islamisation" of Europe and "criminal asylum seekers".

The suspect, a housemate of the dead man, has confessed, claiming during questioning that a money dispute got out of hand, a spokesman for the public prosecutor s office said.

The victim, a 20-year-old man, identified in the media as Khaled Idris Bahray, was found dead by passers-by early on January 13 near the back entrance of his refugee accommodation.

Police initially said there was no reason to suspect foul play but after a postmortem examination corrected this to say he had died from multiple stab wounds to the neck and chest.

A Greens party lawmaker then lodged a legal complaint against persons unknown over the way the probe had been handled.

The victim had lived in Dresden since September and was staying in housing he shared with seven other asylum-seekers from Eritrea.

A welfare organisation looking after young Africans had reported the daubing of a Nazi swastika in the hall of the asylum-seekers  accommodation.
