Panetta assures Indonesian counterpart that US will support stability in South China Sea region.

US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta met with his Indonesian counterpart for bilateral talks on the sidelines of an ASEAN defence ministers meeting on Sunday to boost the US presence in the Pacific in efforts to balance China’s rising influence in the region.Indonesia is Panetta’s first stop during his Asia tour including Japan and South Korea.Indonesia Defence Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro said at the bilateral talks with Panetta that the United State would give its full support for resolving the South China Sea conflict in the region.Panetta was scheduled to meet Indonesia President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono Monday during the opening ceremony of the ASEAN defence ministers meeting.
