Santiago: 6.8 magnitude quake rattles Central Chille

A 6.8 magnitude earthquake rattled central Chile on Friday, striking close to a zone hit by a devastating quake a year ago and shaking buildings in the capital Santiago.

Scared residents who remembered last years deadly quake fled into the street in Concepcion and nearby areas of south-central Chile. While the others along the coastal region evacuated, fearing a tsunami. An 8.8-magnitude earthquake and ensuing tsunami struck Chile on 27th February 2010, killing about 500 people and wrecking infrastructure across central-southern areas of the country.After the 2010 earthquake, the government dismissed a tsunami alert. Coastal residents returned to their homes only to be struck by a tsunami that caused more damages and deaths. Chileans have reported several strong tremors in the ensuing hour.
