Torrential rain flooded north eastern Turkey, causing severe damage and leaving hundreds of homes under water on Tuesday, Turkish media reported. Television pictures from the city of Giresun showed flood waters rushing through the streets on Monday night and by Tuesday morning, inundating at least two hundred homes, according to media reports. Giresun's mayor Kerim Aksu said the heavy rains which began on Monday afternoon have flooded the town. The city's infrastructure was severely damaged in the storm and homes in nearby villages were also badly affected, he said. However, despite the poor weather and a landslide, he said the town's residents were all safe. In the nearby town of Rize, bulldozers were busy trying to clear the roads on Tuesday following the heavy rainfall but some residents remained stranded and stood on the roof of their apartment block, watching the flood waters rushing past. Northern Turkey has been badly affected by floods over the past two weeks with at least three people killed, several missing and damage caused to homes and bridges.
