First round of Pak-India secretary-level talks conclude

The second and third round of secretary-level talks will be held in Islamabad today.

Talking to the media after the first round of talks, Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir said that the best way to fight terrorism is to follow the recommendations suggested in the 1999 declaration of Lahore and the Agreement of Memorandum with India.India’s Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao said that the talks were held in a very friendly environment. He said that rather than separate policies, a joint policy is needed to control terrorism. Nirupama Rao added that several confidence building measures were agreed on but they would not be disclosed in the media. He said that Pak-India experts would soon meet to implement the confidence building measures while the dates of these negotiations would be done through a diplomatic channel.Nirupama Rao said that the leadership recommended that the secretary-level talks should be held to restore relations. He added that peace and stability in the region is vital for developments and improvements in India and Pakistan relations.The two-day Pak-India secretary-level talks have been divided in to three rounds. In the first round regional security situation would be discussed while in the second round the Kashmir issue would be discussed. In the last and third round confidence-building measures and dialogue on friendly exchange would take place.
