Muzaffarabad: Hearing of Kishanganga project case on Thursday

The arbitration court would initiate hearing on disputed Kishanganga hydropower project on Thursday.

The chief of the arbitration court Stephen Myron Schwebel would arrive in Lahore on Wednesday.Pakistan had submitted a case in the international arbitration court on May 27 against 330 megawatt hydro power and storage project in Bandipora district of Indian held Kashmir.The objections were raised in the appeal regarding diversion of the river and keep the exit water gate down from the lakes dead level.The lawyers from Pakistan’s side include Louis, James Crawford and Simpson Wordsworth while Commissioner Indus Water Treaty Aranga Nathan including other expert would defend the Indian side.Talking to Dunya News a few days ago, Wapda Chairman Shakil Durrani had declared Kishanganga dangerous for Neelum-Jhelum hydropower project.After physical inspection of Neelum-Jhelum hydropower project and hearing of arguments from both sides, the members of the arbitration court and delegations of both the countries would move to Pandipora on June 17 for inspection of the power project.Pakistan once again would try to get stay order on the project.According to Indus Water Treaty, India was permitted to construct hydropower projects without affecting Pakistan’s powe projects and irrigation system.The quantity of water would reduce by 13 percent and the power generation in Neelum-Jhelum hydropower project would fall by 30 percent due to diversion of Kishanganga River.
