Karachi: Non-use of helmet major cause of death in motorcyclists

Majority of the 700 motorcyclists, who die in road accidents in Karachi annually, dont wear helmet.

There are more than 1.2 million motorcycles in Karachi. According to traffic laws the motorcyclists are bound to wear a helmet. But majority of the motorcyclists violate this law and there had been no positive result of the Karachi police campaign against the violators of the law. Senior Superintendent of Traffic Police, Ali Raza, was of the view that the motorcyclists did not use helmets due to low rate of fine.Some people alleged that the traffic police take action against motorcyclists but violate this law themselves by not wearing the helmet. At least 1.3 million people were challanned for not wearing helmet during the past three years.According to police and medical experts, majority of people who die in accidents receive head injuries. They were of the view that use of helmet could brinfg this ratio down.
