SC cancels governments powers for gas connection allotment

Supreme Court on Thursday has suspended the governments discretionary powers for the allotment of gas connection and asked the government to formulate a new policy in this regard.

A three-member SC bench, chaired by the Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, heard the suo motu notice against the government’s discretionary powers for the allotment of gas connections.Secretary petroleum Imtiaz Qazi submitted a report to the court about the government’s policy. He told the court that funds to lay the gas pipe lines are issued on the Prime Minister’s directions. The Chief Justice called the government’s gas connection policy discriminatory and unconstitutional. He said that under this policy the poor would be deprived of the gas connection. The Chief Justice inquired from the petroleum secretary whether he would like to work in compliance with the constitution or like to implement the flawed policy of the government. The secretary said that the policy would be amended.
