The former army chief has been allotted at least 90 acres of land in Lahore

LAHORE (Dunya News) – Former army chief General (r) Raheel Sharif has been allotted at least 868 kanal land, equivalent to around 90 acres in the capital of Punjab after retirement.

As discussed in programme, ‘Nuqta-e-Nazar’, the ex-Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) has been allotted 50 acres land in capacity of a four star General and remaining 40 acres for being the army chief.

Expanding on the matter in the programme via telephone call, Major General (r) Ejaz Awan said that Article 226 of the 1973 Constitution governs Border Allotment Committees that are responsible for handing over the pieces of land. He said that if the policy is deemed unnecessary, the constitution is needed to be amended.

In the light of the policy, there are two types of allotments in the army, Major General (r) Awan explained.

1- A piece of land that is situated within eight kilometers of the international border

2- A barren piece of land handed over to Welfare Directorate of the army by provinces to be allotted to deserving persons ranging in ranks from sepoy to all the way up.

Major General (r) let it out that he was allotted 35 acres of land at Bahawalpur border.

He further informed that the land allotted to army officials near the international border is bound by a clause to not be used for a purpose other than agriculture. The land can neither be used for any commercial purpose nor can be given to DHAs.

While talking about the speculation over General (r) Raheel Sharif’s allotment, he condemned the ‘propaganda’ and said that it aimed at discouraging the troops.
