Kasur child abuse case: 14 out of 15 suspects behind bars

Dunya News

Victims were filmed being sexually abused by a gang of 15 men since 2007 in Husain Khanwala village.

KASUR (Web Desk / AFP) – Another 31 victims are likely to file complaints in police station today (Tuesday) against suspects involved a major child sex abuse scandal in Kasur district, Dunya News reported.

At least 280 children were filmed being sexually abused by a gang of 15 men since 2007 who used the hundreds of videos they produced to blackmail the youngsters  parents. The abusers allegedly tried to extort money from parents of victims, selling clips of the videos locally for 40 rupees each if they did not pay up.

The total number of suspects in custody stands at 14 following Monday s arrests while one suspect is still at large.

Shahbaz Sharif, the chief minister of Punjab province, has formed a five-member joint investigation team to probe the incident. The team headed by DIG Abu Bakkar Khuda Bakhsh comprises SSP Khalid Cheema, DSP Liaquat Ali and two officers of intelligence agencies.
The investigation team will present its report to the Chief Minister within 14 days.

Earlier on Monday, the Lahore High Court declined the chief minister s request for formation of judicial commission, saying police should continue their investigation.

Activists working to fight child sex abuse in Pakistan said the problem was widespread but difficult to quantify because victims were often unwilling to speak out.

The concept of family "honour" is very important in Pakistani society and many people would be afraid of the "shame" it would bring to admit being the victim of a sexual assault.
