Connective bridges not restored, dozens stranded in Chitral

Army helicopter is distributing relief goods in different areas of the district

CHITRAL (Dunya News) – The connective bridges in Chitral district and Skardu have not been restored until Thursday leaving dozens of people stranded.

Relief activities continue in Chitral and Skardu. District administration and army have distributed staple diet, tents, quilts and medicines among flood affectees.

Moreover, a C-130 aircraft reached Chitral with a ration stock for at least 500 families. A relief camp has been established in Boni.

Army helicopter is distributing relief goods in different areas of the district. On the other hand, reconstruction of houses has also been started. Separately, roads are being cleared and repaired in Diamer and Hunza Nagar.

Relief activities are also continuing in Garam Chashma, Mastuj, Kalash, Darush and Boni.

Earlier on July 22, Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif went on an aerial visit of the flood hit areas of Chitral and waived off agricultural debt of the affectees while announcing a relief package of Rs 500 million.

He said he was relieved that no lives have been lost in the flood and that the government will help Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government and flood affectees in every possible way.

The political leadership seemed to have come to the realization of the magnitude of the disaster. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Pervaiz Khattak went on an aerial visit of the flood-hit areas.

The political leadership was briefed of the situation by GOC Malakand Major General Nadir Khan. PM Nawaz paid rich tribute to the Pakistan Army for timely relief efforts and the civil administration for its assistance.

Talking to the affectees, PM Nawaz said that he hasn’t come to Chitral just to see destruction of the river but also to see the victims.

Addressing the local elders, PM said that the Lawari Tunnel will be completed in 1.5 years, adding that the pathway can be spread across the country via Chitral.

He assured that KP and Balochistan will be part of the Pakistan-China Economic Corridor project.

Nawaz Sharif praised GOC Major General Nadir and local government for immediately starting the relief effort while ignoring Khattak who was sitting right beside him.
