PM Nawaz chairs high-level meeting to discuss Karachi situation

Prime Minister ordered immediate closure of illegal mobile SIMs.

KARACHI (Web Desk) – Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif today (Wednesday) chaired a high-level meeting is at the Governor House in Karachi to review law and order situation of the city, Dunya News reported.

Sindh Governor Dr. Ishrat-ul-Ibad, Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif, Corps Commander Karachi, Director General ISI, Director General Rangers and Inspector General of Police Sindh attended the meeting.

Members of Awami National Party (ANP), Jamaat-e-Islami and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) were also present in the meeting.

During the meeting, DG Rangers and Sindh chief secretary briefed Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif about progress in ongoing targeted operation in Karachi.

Anti-encroachment operation, transfer of anti-terrorist courts, installation of scanners on internal points of the city, Lyari gang war, trial of suspects and other anti-crime measures were discussed during the meeting.

On the occasion, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif ordered immediate closure of illegal mobile SIMs. He also directed issuance of red warrants against criminals who have fled abroad.

The Prime Minister stated that peace in Karachi is top priority and federal government is working with Sindh government in this regard.

Karachi, a city and port of more than 18 million people, is home to many criminal gangs. Many political parties there have armed wings to fight turf wars.

The port city typically sees about more than two dozen murders every week, a combination of political killings, attacks by the Taliban and sectarian militant groups, and street crime.
