District Nazim Lahore Mian Amir Mehmood has called to abandon the decision to cut the powers entitled to the nazims, saying that power should accompany duties, Dunya News reported.Talking to the reporters at a press conference held at Lahore on Thursday, Amir said that the ending of local bodies would directly affect the layman as it is an approachable institution, which get to know the public issues at the earliest.It merits mentioning that the duration of local bodies system is going to end today at 12:00pm.Background of local bodies systemFormer president Gen (r) Pervez Musharraf has introduced the local bodies system in 2001 across the country under the power devolution plan.Under the plan, district nazims, tehsil nazims town nazims, council nazims and councilors were to be elected for four-year duration.The women also got 1/3 seats in the system. The district governments completed their first tenure, i.e from 2001-2005 successfully.The elections were again held in 2005 to form new district governments, the duration of which was to end on October 15, however, the incumbent government extended the date till December 31, 2009, which would end tonight at 12:00pm.
