Govt postpones privatization of LPP
The court has ordered Secretary Water and Power to submit written statement in this regard.
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) Government has postponed privatization of leasehold Lakhra Coal Power Plant. The court has ordered the government to submit written statement regarding ultimate decision taken by the government.
Three-member bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry conducted hearing of the aforesaid case. Secretary Water and Power Saifullah Chatha told the court that the government has postponed privatization of Lakhra Power Plant.
Chief Justice also remarked that despite having the example of rental power case before them, people don’t learn lesson from the past.
He added that former chairman WAPDA is responsible for privatization of Lakhra Coal Power Plant, so legal action should be taken against him.
He contended that former chairman also may be tried if it is proved he had taken wrong decision in this regard. The aforesaid project is a national project not an item for sale, concluded Chief Justice.
Justice Azmat consulted either the government has postponed the decision or withdrawn from it.
Upon this, the Secretary Water and Power told the court that until and unless reservations are removed, the decision regarding postponement would remain on status quo.
At this, the apex court ordered the Secretary Water and Power to submit written statement regarding postponement of privatization of aforesaid project.
