Dunya News

Lahore High Court has termed the appointment of Chairman PTA Farooq Awan illegal.

ISLAMABAD: Amid political unrest in the country, the Lahore High Court Tuesday, terminated Chairman Pakistan Telecommunication Authority Muhammad Farooq Awan.

In an order issued here, Lahore High Court (LHC) has termed the appointment of Chairman PTA Farooq Awan illegal and said that appointment of Chairman PTA was not accordance to laws.

Hearing a petition in which petitioner had pleaded that government has not followed the proper procedure for appointment of Chairman PTA and requirements regarding appointment of Chairman PTA not fulfilled.

In this petition it was mention that post of chairman PTA was not advertised in any national paper and his appointment was made without adverting the post.

After thoroughly looking into the matter LHC has declared the appointment of Chairman PTA null and void.

In its order LHC said that appointment of Chairman PTA was made on political influence and merit system was completely ignored.

It is pertinent to mention here that couple of days ago LHC has issued an interim order and directed Chairman PTA to restrict himself and not to take any action without prior approval of member finance and member technical. Farooq Awan had probably seen this coming and wasn’t coming to office for last four weeks.

Sources in the industry told that although political situation is not good and it is premature to decide that who would be the next Chairman PTA however, Kamran Ali member legal Ministry of Finance and Dr Khawar Siddique Khokhar member technical PTA are strong candidates for the appointment of new chairman PTA.
